OVERVIEW: Area 3 of Special Olympics is one of 28 local programs under the umbrella of Special Olympics Virginia. Each area is defined by a geographic boundary of service, and Area 3 provides service to the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, and Fluvanna. Athletes participating in any of Area 3’s sports programs typically reside within this area; however, exceptions are made if adjacent areas do not offer training in a particular sports program provided in Area 3.

SPORTS OFFERED: Area 3 offers sports training in ten different sports over the course of a year. These sports and the months of the year, the typical day of the week, and location they are held are shown in the following table. Schedule details may vary slightly from year to year and registered athletes receive a mailing prior to the sport that provides the specific details.
Golf August-October, Wednesday evenings at Birdwood Golf Course
Soccer August-October, Saturday mornings at Charlottesville High School
Gymnastics September-December, Saturday afternoon at Classics Gymnastics Center
Skiing November-January at Wintergreen, meeting times vary
Bowling November-February, Sunday afternoons at Kegler’s
Basketball January-March, Saturday afternoons at Albemarle High School
Swimming March-June, Sunday afternoons at the Gator Dome at Fairview Swim and Tennis Club
Track and Field April-June, Saturday mornings at Albemarle High Track
Tennis April-May, Sunday afternoons at Pen Park
Volleyball August-October, Sunday afternoons at the Charlottesville Catholic School, 1205 Pen Park Road

ELIGIBILITY: Persons are eligible for Special Olympics competition provided they are:

  • at least eight years of age,
  • have been identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a closely related developmental disability, and
  • have registered to participate in Special Olympics.
Persons whose functional limitations are based solely on physical, behavioral, or emotional disability or a specific learning or sensory disability are not eligible to participate as Special Olympics athletes.

REGISTRATION: Persons eligible for competition must register with Special Olympics by completing the Official Special Olympics Release Form and the Application for Participation in Special Olympics Form.

VOLUNTEERS: All persons serving in Area 3 Special Olympics as coaches, assistant coaches, helpers, officers, committee chair persons and members, unified sports partners, etc. are volunteers. Those who volunteer more than once must complete class A volunteer forms or unified partner volunteer forms. Those volunteering one time for specific events must complete class B volunteer forms.
